Hawarden Independent, November 6, 1919

Charles Lee Smith died at 8 o'clock last evening at the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. George E. Smith, on the north side, after an illness of several months. He came home from Texas about two months ago on account of his health and an operation followed in hopes of giving relief. He was in the hospital several weeks and then returned to the home of his parents. All that medical skill and loving hands could so was done to restore him to health, but of no avail. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church at 2:30 Friday afternoon and interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery. Rev. A. M. McIntosh will conduct the services and the M.W.A. will have charge of the obsequies at the grave. His six surviving brothers will act as pall bearers. The deceased was born at Lone Tree, Iowa, Nov. 15, 1874, and came to Calliope with his parents in December, 1896. He has since made his home here. For several years he followed elevator construction work, in which line he became very proficient and successful. He was a steady and industrious workman and was held in high regard by all who knew him. He is survived by his aged parents and six brothers and four sisters. The brothers and sisters are: Frank A. and Harry L. of Oacoma, SD; Fred and Burr of Hawarden; Wm. B. of Marion, Iowa; Robert A. of Huron, SD; Mrs. I. P. Potter of Claremont, SD; Mrs. Albert Williamson of Kennebec, S.D.; Mrs. Arthur Waterman and Miss Carrye Smith of Hawarden.
