Hawarden Independent, December 22, 1949

Funeral services for Harry Smith, who died last Thursday at Cherokee, were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with Rev. B. Roy Brown officiating. The funeral was under the direction of the Frazier Funeral service. Miss Ruth Wood, with Mrs. P. W. Peters as accompanist, was the soloist.

Harry Emmer Smith was born at Doon and he farmed both in Iowa and South Dakota. He came to Hawarden in 1944.

He was a member of the American Legion having served in World War I. He participated in the battle of St. Mihiel, Meuse Argonne.

He is survived by his widow; two children, Donald of Clarinda and Mrs. Emmer Lieske of Hawarden; two grandchildren, Donita Joy Lieske and Priscilla Smith; five brothers, Marvin of Lester, IA; Russell of Hills, MN; Howard of Alliance, NE; Harley of Denver, and George of Huron, SD.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral services were: Mr. & Mrs. Donald T. Smith of Clarinda, IA; Mrs. George Smith; Mr. Milton Smith and son Bob of Huron, SD; Mrs. Mary Bolding of Sioux Falls, SD; Mrs. Minnie Smith; Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Smith and son Gary, and Miss Darlene Smith all of Yankton, SD; Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Smith, Sr.; Mr. & Mrs. Marvin R. Smith, Jr., all of Lester, IA; Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Brunner and sons, Howard and Jimmy, of Hudson, SD; Mr. & Mrs. Russell Smith of Hills, MN; and Mr. Donald H. Smith of Scotland, SD.
