Hawarden Independent, July 28, 1932

Frank A. Smith of Oacoma, SD, eldest son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Geo Smith, long time Hawarden residents, was found dead Tuesday morning in the garage at his home, a victim of carbon monoxide gas poisoning, according to the Lyman county coroner who conducted an inquest.

According to press dispatches Mr. Smith arose early in the morning but failed to appear for breakfast. A search was begun and his body was found in the automobile in the family garage.

Although his parents came to Hawarden nearly forty years ago and other members of the family have resided in this community ever since, the deceased never made his home here. He was about 60 years of age and was the owner of a private bank at Oacoma, which he had operated for 35 years. It was reported that he had experienced no banking difficulties and there was no apparent reason for a suicide but it is stated that he had not been in good health for a couple of years.

Mr. Smith had made occasional visits to Hawarden and was quite well known to a number of citizens here. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Almen Smith of Lead, SD, and Budd Smith of Oacoma, and two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Wendel Schmidt of Kadota, SD and Evelyn Smith of Oacoma. He also leaves five brothers and four sisters, Mrs. Arthur Waterman; Miss Carrye; Burr and Fred Smith of Hawarden; Harry Smith of Carathers, CA; William Smith of Perry, IA; Robert Smith of Huron, SD; Mrs. I. P. Potter of Bijou Hills, SD and Mrs. Albert Williamson of Redfield, SD.

Mrs. Arthur Waterman and son Gailon, and Miss Carrye Smith and William Smith of Perry, IA, left here Wednesday for Oacoma, to attend the funeral which was held at 10 o'clock this morning. Burial was made at Oacoma.
