Hawarden Independent, February 5, 1948

Fred E. Smith, a resident of Hawarden and vicinity for more than 50 years, died at the Hawarden hospital early Wednesday morning.

Mr. Smith had been ill the past year. He entered St. Joseph's hospital in Sioux City for an operation last December 15. Later he was brought to the Hawarden hospital.

Funeral services will be held at the Associated church in Hawarden at 2:30 Friday afternoon.

Mr. Smith was born at Lone Tree, Iowa, March 30, 1878, the son of Martha E. & George E. Smith. When a boy he moved to Kimball, S.D., with his parents and later he came to Hawarden.

He married Florence E. Smith of Hawarden, April 8, 1914. In his earlier years he clerked in stores in Hawarden. In 1912 he bought an interest in the C. M. Smith general store which later he sold.

After his marriage he moved onto the Lewis Smith farm, south of Hawarden, where he lived one year. He then lived on a farm northeast of Hawarden nine years. When he left Iowa he bought a farm in Union county, northwest of Hawarden, which was still his home.

When a boy he united with the Presbyterian church in Hawarden.

Survivors are the widow; two sons, Frederick of Collingswood, NJ and Calvin, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Arthur Waterman and Miss Carrye Smith of Hawarden; Mrs. M. M. Potter of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Albert Williamson of Redfield, SD, and four brothers, Burr of Hawarden; Robert of Portland, OR; William B. of Savannah, IL, and Harry L. of Caruthers, CA.
