A. J. Smith, 86, a pioneer of Calliope died recently at his home at Bellingham, Wash.

Mr. Smith was born near Marietta, Ohio, and came to Calliope in 1880. He taught school here a number of years and was married to Mary Gardner. After his marriage he and his wife both taught school in various places in Iowa and South Dakota. He was engaged in the teaching profession for over 50 years.

In 1933 he retired and he and his wife moved to Bellingham, Wash., to be near their son. Mrs. Smith died in 1937.

Survivors are his son, C. B. Smith, of Bellingham, two grandsons and several great grandchildren. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Lewis Smith of Hawarden.
