Hawarden Independent, August 2, 1951

Word reached Hawarden this week that Attorney Clarence Smith of El Centro, CA, 51, former Hawarden man, was killed last Thursday evening. The message came to Mrs. E. A. Wood through her sister, Mrs. Elliott Wood of Pasadena.

The report is that Mr. Smith had stopped along a highway to assist a friend who was having trouble with his car. While at work another car struck Mr. Smith and threw him into a ditch and barbed wire fence.

Mr. Smith, whose father, Milton Smith, was an early day Hawarden merchant, grew up here and graduated from Hawarden high school. After completing high school he enlisted in the navy and was stationed in Washington, D.C. After the war he entered the University of South Dakota at Vermillion and was graduated from the law school.

After completing his law course he went to California and was admitted to the bar in that state. At one time he worked under the county attorney at El Centro. For the past 15 years or more years he has been engaged in private practice.

After going to California he was married. Survivors are the widow; his mother, Mrs. Milton Smith of San Diego, and a sister and brother, Mrs. Frank Hamerly and Richard Smith, both of San Diego. He was a cousin of Scott Burpee of Sioux City.
