From the Sioux County Herald (Orange City), October 26, 1898:

The little three year old daughter of L. Van den Berg on section 2 Holland township who was kicked by a horse Oct. 15th died last Thursday [October 20]. It was hoped that prompt medical care would enable the little sufferer to pull through but all efforts to that end were unavailing.

From the Sioux County Herald, October 19, 1898:

The little two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lammert Van den Berg, who reside near Newkirk, was kicked in the face by a horse last Saturday and frightfully injured. The nose was broken and the face badly cut and bruised and the little one was unconscious for some time. Dr. De Lespinasse was called and dressed the wounds and the child is getting along nicely.
