John H. Smith, 99, a former Ireton resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1983, in San Bernardino, CA. . Memorial services were held in San Bernardino on Monday, Dec. 19. Interment was at Forest Lawn, Covina Hills, CA.

Mr. Smith was born November 17, 1884, at Moville, IA. He married lda Taylor at Ireton on July 3, 1912. They farmed at Winfred, SD, from 1913 to 1932, when they moved to Ireton and continued farming. In 1938 John and Ida purchased the Gamble store at Ireton and later changed the store to the Smith and Smith Hardware. In 1948 they sold the store and moved to Los Angeles where they operated a rooming house.

He was preceded in death by his wife Ida, in 1977, and by his brother, Harry Smith, and sisters Rilla Mcloy and Mable Barnes. Survivors include one daughter, lla Boisen, Ireton; two sons, J. Harold Smith, Fullerton, CA and Taylor Smith, San Bernardino, CA; and one sister, Hazel Rich, Maple Plain, MN.
