Douglas W. Saunders, 39, lieutenant deputy sheriff, of Maurice died unexpectedly in a hospital in Spirit Lake. Services were at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 21, in the Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City. The Rev. Michael Klafehn officiated. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery at Hinton under direction of Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Mr. Saunders was born Oct. 25,1943, at Le Mars. He married Eugenia Foldenauer Jan. 15, 1966, at Pipestone, MN. He was employed with the Sioux County SheriffDepartment for the last 10 years, prior to that he lived at Kingsley. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Ireton, Lutheran Laymen League, Iowa State Sheriff and Deputy Association, National Rifle Association, Sioux County Peace Officers Association, National Sheriff and Deputy Association and Tri-State Peace Officers Association.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Troy and Dwight and one daughter, Yvonne, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Harry (Phyllis) Gries of Kingsley; one brother, Roger of Denver, CO, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Diane) Reinking of Kingsley and Mrs. Stanley (Linda) Jaacks of Storm Lake.
