Mrs. Minnie Grooters, age 94, of Orange City, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1993 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

Minnie, who was actually named Wilhelmina, was born May 15,1898 at Borculo, Mich., the daughter of William and Fannie (Weersing) DeWitt. She was raised at Rudyard and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. In 1917 she moved to Iowa where she was a schoolteacher. On Aug. 23, 1920, in Rudyard, she married Alberto Edward Grooters of Boyden. They lived at Boyden, Sheldon, Algona and Eagle Grove. In 1946 they moved to Orange City, where they owned and operated the Corner Cafe for 18 years. Mr. Grooters died Jan. 10,1977 at Orange City.

Mrs. Grooters was a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City for several years. She moved to the Heritage House in January of 1989. She was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City where in earlier years she had been active in the church's organizations. She had also belonged to the Orange City Federated Women's Club.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert and his wife Henrietta of Alton, and James of Plymouth, Minn.; a daughter, Carole and her husband Karl-Heinz Hilsson of Owatonna, Minn.; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gertrude Ribbens of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Esther Ploegstra of Bradenton, Fla.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter-inlaw, Leona Duven Grooters; son-in-law, Willard Veencamp; two brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Donald De Glopper officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City. Memorials are being directed to the Trinity Reformed Church.
