Henrietta Grooters, age 70, of Alton, died Friday, June 12, 1998 at the Orange City Hospital after a lengthy illness. A memorial service was held on Monday, June 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alton Presbyterian Church. The Rev. E. Bradley Carloss officiated. Burial was held prior to the service at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. A family prayer service was held on Monday at 12:45 p.m. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Henrietta was born Sept. 27, 1927 in Orange City, the daughter of Henry and Gertrude (Timmers) Den Hartog. She was raised in Orange City where she graduated from the Christian School and attended the high school through her sophomore year. She then worked at Van's Drug and the Corner Cafe to help with family finances during the Depression.

On Feb. 20, 1947 she married Robert W. Grooters in Orange City. They lived in various places until 1951 when they settled in Alton. She had suffered from health problems for the past 17 years, but she enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and travel vacations. Mrs. Grooters was a member of the Alton Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bob; two sons and their wives, James and Shirley Grooters of Simi Valley, Calif., and Dan and Lynn Grooters of Orange City; two daughters and their husbands, Vicki and Joe Wacek of Blooming Prairie, Minn.; and Bonnie and Terry Goslinga of Minneapolis, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Jackie Minten of Alton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jo Vander Stoep; and three brothers, Clarence, Jim and Larry Den Hartog. Memorials are being directed to the public libraries in Alton and Orange City.
