Gertie Rus, 89, a former volunteer for the Hope Haven Foster Grandparent Program, died Monday, June 23, 1997, at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City. Gertie Van Maanen was born July 6,1907, in Ede, Holland, She moved to Sioux Center, Iowa, with her family at age 1.

She married Bert Rus on January 15,1929, in Rock Valley. They lived in the Armour-Corsica area until 1944, when they moved near Alvord, Iowa, and later to the Inwood, Iowa area. They retired and moved to Rock Valley in 1966. Her husband died May 22,1980. She moved to Valley Manor in Rock Valley in February 1996. She was a volunteer for Hope Haven's Foster Grandparent Program for more than 10 years.

Survivors include two sons: John D. and Lee of Calumet, Iowa; and Edward and Sharon of Hawarden, Iowa; two daughters: Mrs. Dick (Lucille) Dorhout of Rock Valley; and Bernice Van Den Oever of Doon, Iowa; ; two brothers: Gerrit of Rock Valley; and Lou Van Maanen of Rock Valley and Hymen "Ike" and Lavonne VAn Maanen of Mesa, AZ; and a sister, Tina Van Marrel of Orange City, Iowa. a sister in law, Gert Winters of Orange City, 22 grand and two step great grandchildren.

Services were Thursday at Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with burial in Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley. Visitation was at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

She was precede in death by a son Cornie, a daughter in law Connie Rus and a son in law Richard Richters.
