John E. Graves, 74, of Rock Valley, died Thursday, April 3, 1986 at Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Services were held Monday, April 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. William Wingert and the Rev. Dennis Sefeik officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery.

Mr. Graves was born December 7, 1911, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota where he attended school. He was a baker prior to his marriage. He married Wilmina Jacobs on April 27, 1937, in Rock Valley, and the couple moved to Chicago where he worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. After his discharge from service, the couple made their home in Rock Valley. He was employed as a plumber and electrician until retiring in 1972. Mrs. Graves died August 16, 1982.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Rock Valley.

Survivors include two sons, Charles of Denver, Colorado, and Herman of Rock Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Ethel) Moerman of Richland, Washington, and Mrs. Kirk (Jan) Hoffman of San Diego, California; one sister, Mrs. Marie Parish of Charleston, South Carolina; and five grandchildren.
