Jay Arlin DeSmit, 52, of Rock Valley died Wednesday, October 29, 1997 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Services were held on Saturday, November 1 at 1:30 P.M. at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Mike Molenaar officiated. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery under the direction of the Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Jay was born August 17, 1945 in Hudson, South Dakota, the son of Leonard and Tena (Kooima) De Smit. He was employed with Silent Sioux Company of Orange City.

Mr. DeSmit married Thelma Dykstra on March 28, 1969 in Rock Valley. The couple made their home in Rock Valley. He was employed with Sandbulte Dairy, then with Harkers-Tyson, now known as George Quik to Fix, processing plant in Sioux Center.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma; his father of Hawarden; three sons, Jason and his wife Joy, and Troy, all of Rock Valley, and Michael and his wife Faye of Sioux Center; two daughters and their husbands, Julie and Tim Bartels of Rock Valley and Tricia and Troy of Hills, Minnesota; a brother and his wife, Arnold and Helen of Orange City; a sister and her husband, Albertha and Arnold DeJong of Hull; a granddaughter, Breanna Joy DeSmit.

He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Cornelius; and a sister, Sharon Van Beek.
