Mrs. Gertrude M. Smit, age 54, of Hull, passed away Tuesday, September 6, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley after an illness of three months.

Gertrude Mae was born March 5, 1934, at Hull, the daughter of Raymond Rens and Matilda Bos Rens. She was raised in Hull, but moved to California as an adult.

On August 23, 1957, she married Donald Smit at Long Beach, California. They made their home in California for two years and then returned to Hull, where they farmed northeast of town.

For several years, Mrs. Smit was employed by Den Hoed’s Greenhouses. She has been a residential attendant for Hope Haven the last two years.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Hull, where she was active in the women’s organizations, including the Esther Circle.

Mrs. Smit was preceded in death by her son, Mark, and her father.

Survivors include her husband, Donald; two sons, Michael of Rock Valley; and Merlin, of Ontario, California; granddaughter, Angela; mother, Matilda Rens, sister, Marilyn De Leeuw, and brother, Richard Rens, all of Bellflower, California.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 9, at the First Reformed Church of Hull, with the Rev. Gerald Vander Velde and Mr. Bruce Osbeck officiating. Interment followed at Hope Cemetery in Hull, under the direction of the Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home of Hull.
