Mr. Dowie E. Smit, age 78, of Hull, passed away Thursday, February 8, at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

Dowie Edward was born December 24, 1911, at Boyden, the son of John W. Smit and Louisa De Boer Smit. He was raised at Hull.

On March 10, 1936, he married Catharina S. Drews at Rock Rapids. For 23 years they farmed at Hull. They then moved into Hull, where he was employed by the Farmers Co-op Elevator and later at the Moz-all company.

Mr. Smit was a member of the American Reformed Church of Hull. He was also president of the Hull Senior Citizens Club and an avid bowler.

Survivors include his wife, Catharina; two daughters, Eileen, and her husband Marvin Boon, of Schofield, Wisconsin; and Rosemary, and her husband Lester Harman, of Hull; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother, August, of Hull; and a sister, Mrs. Gerrit (Julia) Hofkamp, of Sibley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Walter.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 12, at the First Reformed Church of Hull, with the Rev. Philip Sneller officiating. Interment followed at Hope Cemetery in Hull, under the direction of Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home of Hull.
