Peter L. Smit, 89, of Rock Valley, died Friday, January 1, in a Rock Valley Hospital after a brief illness.

Services were at 1:30 P.M. Monday at the Porter Funeral Home with the Rev. A. Den Boer officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Family visitation was from 7:30 to 9 P.M. Saturday in the funeral home.

Mr. Smit was born November 9, 1892, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and moved to the U.S. in 1910. He married Jennie Shurman February 20, 1916. She died February 23, 1917. He married Frances De Groot December 27, 1927, in Volga, South Dakota. She died in October 1956. Mr. Smit moved to Rock Valley in 1945.

Survivors are one daughter, Jennie Miller of Rock Valley; one brother, Jerrit of Grand Rapids, Michigan; one sister, Nellie Klarenbeek of Rock Valley; 6 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren
