Mrs. J. S. Shoup, mother of Mrs. B. F. Anderson of Hawarden, passed away Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wilbur C. Newton, at Joliet, Ill., from heart trouble. Mrs. Anderson received word Saturday noon of her critical illness and Mr. and Mrs. Anderson departed immediately by auto to Joliet.

The remains were brought to her old home at Smithland, (Woodbury County)Iowa, for interment and funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church at that place and interment was made in the cemetery there. Members of the Easter Star conducted the services at the grave.

Mrs. Shoup was 80 years of age and had been a resident of Iowa for more than 50 years. She was born in Union-town, Ala., March 10, 1849, and lived there until 1870 when she came to northwestern Iowa. She lived at different times in Smithland, Merrill and Danbury. Her husband, who was a former superintendent of the Woodbury county schools, preceded her in death 16 years ago. Since then Mrs. Shoup has divided her time with her children, having resided in Hawarden, at various times in recent years. During the past year she has been with her daughter at Joliet where her death occurred.

She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Lena Dicks of Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs Wilbur C. Newton of Joliet, Ill.; Mrs. Nona Fitzpatrick of St. Louis, Mo.; Miss Mittie Shoup of Missoula, Mont.; and Mrs. B. F. Anderson of Hawarden, and two sons, J. P. Shoup of Sioux City and Capt. A. K. Shoup of the U.S. Navy, Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Shoup had made many friends in Hawarden during the time which she spent here, who learned with deep regret of her death and who extend sincerest sympathy to the members of her family.
