Alton Democrat of Aug 25, 1906
Former Orange City residents.

Little Martha Hoekstra the six year old daughter of Simon Hoekstra living in Sheldon met with an accident last week that has resulted in death. Milton De La Mater was taking a new threshing outfit out to his farm and passing the Hoekstra's home the girl with some of the neighbor's girls climbed onto the tongue of the big separator for a ride. They had been warned to keep off but childlike did not heed and with the rig moving the Hoekstra girl lost her balance and fell from the tongue with her head in front of the oncoming wheel. One of the others snatched the little one away but the wheel of the heavy machine passed over her leg below the knee crushing it frightfully. She died Wednesday and the body was taken through Alton to Orange City for burial Thursday.

(From the 1900 census and ancestry.com Sye Hoekstra born 20 Oct 1857 Friesland Neth. died 11 Sept 1934 Sheldon, his wife Kate Van Dyke born 1860 died 1924. They had a large family, some of the children were Antje, Cornelius, Anna, Rentje, Harry, Agnes, Jake, Martha. )
