Hawarden Independent of Feb 7, 1980

Dr. B.C. Gerdes, 77, of Hawarden, died Wednesday, Jan. 30 in a hospital while vacationing in Texas. Services were at 2:30 ;p.m. Sunday in the Associated Church in Hawarden. Dr. Heston Milligan officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery. A Masonic service was conducted Saturday evening at the Dow Funeral Home.

Dr. Gerdes was born March 10, 1902, at George. He received his B A degree from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls in 1926.
He married Hazel Jackson March 18, 1927, at Waterloo.

He served as superintendent of schools for 10 years, in different places. He entered Southern College of Optometry at Memphis, Tenn., graduating in 1940. He practiced in Hawarden since that time.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Hawarden, Abu-Bekr Shrine Temple in Sioux City and the Associated Church.

Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. William (Kathryn) Harris of Bedford, and Mrs. LeRoy (Linde) Ross of Hawarden; one son, Dr. Garry Gerdes of Cherokee; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Harm Geerdes and Raymond Harms, both of George; one sister, Mrs. Grace Rypkema of George; three halfbrothers, Arthur and Elmore Geerdes, both of George and George Geerdes of Arizona; four half sisters, Mrs. Vera Eberline and Miss Emily Geerdes, both of George, Mrs. Dorothy Hilbrands of Sheldon and Mrs. Minnie Rypkema of Denver, Colo.
