Marvin F. Thelen, 59, of Granville, baseball coach at Remsen St. Mary's High School, died Tuesday in a Sioux City hospital of injuries suffered in a car-train accident near Merrill.

Services were at 2 p.m., Friday, October 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. The Rev. Paul Eisele and the Rev. Dennis Sefcik both of St. Mary's of Remsen, the Rev. Robert Gralapp of Granville, the Rev. Timothy Hogan of Oyens, the Rev. Richard Sitzmann of Sioux City and the Rev. Craig Collison of Struble concelebrated. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery at Granville.

Thelen was born June 23, 1928 in Estherville. He moved as a child with his parents to the Granville area where he was raised and educated. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Granville in 1946, attended Loras College at Dubuque and graduated from Westmar College in Le Mars in 1957. He taught and coached at St. Joseph's School at Granville, Melvin High School, Marcus Holy Name School and St. Mary's at Remsen since 1964. He became head coach five years later.

Thelen was elected to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1975 and was a member of the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include two brothers, Erwin of St. Charles, MO and James of LeMars and two sisters, Madonna Thelen of Granville and Betty Warren of Cedar Rapids.
