John J. Thelen, 88, of Granville, died Wednesday, June 18, at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, after a brief illness.

Services were at 10:30 a.m., Friday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville. The Rev. Francis Nemmers officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Mr. Thelen was born Aug. 11, 1897 in Breda, where he was raised and attended St. Bernard School. He was engaged in farming in the Breda and Estherville areas. He married Appolonia Oswald, Jan. 17, 1923, at Mount Carmel. The couple moved to the Granville area in 1932 where he farmed until 1939 when he became custodian for St. Joseph's parish. He retired in 1977. Mrs. Thelen died Jan. 28, 1978.

Mr. Thelen was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include four sons, Julius of Santa Clara, CA; Erwin of St. Charles, MO; Marvin of Granville, and James of LeMars; two daughters, Madonna Thelen of Granville and Mrs. Ray (Betty) Warren of Cedar Rapids; four brothers, Math & Fred, both of Breda, Paul of Clarissa, MN, and Bert of Estherville; four sisters, Mrs. Ed (Julia) Neppl of Estherville; Mrs. Al (Hilaria) Bernholtz and Mrs. Don (Leona) McCaffrey, both of Carroll and Mrs. Roy (Helen) Kelly of Lake View; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas (Catherine Julick) Thelan; one brother in infancy and three sisters; Marie, Mrs. Engelbert (Appolonia) Neppl, and Mrs. Pete (Martha) Heinrichs.
