Sioux County's first fatal traffic accident of 1953 was recorded Sunday when Mrs. Alice Van Wyhe, 39, of Ireton died of injuries following a collision on a gravel road 1 1/2 miles southwest of Ireton.

Mrs. Van Wyhe and her husband Bryan were on their way to church in their pickup truck when the vehicle skidded on the icy road and stalled crosswise in the road. Clarence Mulder of Ireton stopped his car to help the Van Wyhes and his car also became stalled across the road, blocking it.

Gerrit Kruid 21, Ireton came over the crest of the hill, was unable to stop on the icy road and crashed into the side of the Van Wyhe truck.

Mrs. Van Wyhe had gotten out of the truck and was standing on the opposite side of the machine when the Kruid car crashed into it, knocking the truck against her. Sheriff Harry Dykstra said.

She was taken to the Hawarden hospital where she died as she was being admitted. No one else was injured in the crash.
