Fred J. Starkenburg, 69, of Alton, died Monday, June 23, in a nursing home at Pierre, South Dakota.

Services were at 10 A.M. Thursday in the United Presbyterian Church at Alton. The Rev. David Johnson officiated. Burial was in Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton under the direction of Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.

Mr. Starkenburg was born July 11, 1910, at Volga, South Dakota.

He married Bernadette Miller November 17, 1935, at Alton. She died December 1, 1972. He was employed most of his life at the Alton Well and Concrete Co. He semi-retired in 1975 and moved to the nursing home in September of 1979.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. John (Shirley) Hatch of Pierre; three grandchildren; two brothers, William and Garrett, both of Alton; three sisters, Mrs. Emmett (Dorothy) Root and Mrs. Clifford (Arlene) Castle, both in California, and Mrs. Bill (Ollie) Brower of Spirit Lake.
