Sioux Center News, September 13, 1984

Fred W. Stuart, 74, retired Sioux City elementary school principal, formerly of Orange City, died Tuesday in a Sioux City hospital after a long illness.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Skinner will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery under the direction of the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. The body was cremated.

Mr. Stuart was born Nov. 10, 1909 in Orange City. He married Gilberta Van Beek, June 26, 1934 in Orange City. He graduated from Iowa State University and received his masters degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He was superintendent of the Merrill, Iowa, Union Consolidates school district and superintendent at Kiron before coming to Woodrow Wilson Junior High School as physical education instructor in 1946. He was appointed elementary school principal in 1951. He taught in the Sioux City school system for 30 years, 24 of which he was an elementary principal.

He was a life member of the Sioux City Teachers Association, the National Education Association and National Association of Elementary Principals. He was a member of the Sioux City Teachers Credit Union, First Presbyterian Church and the Sioux City Boat Club. He was a 50 year member of Pi Kappa Alpha at Iowa State University and received the "N" certificate from Northwestern College Athletic Department. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Linda) Ellis of Minneapolis; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Hurd of Sioux Falls, SD and two grandchildren.
