Mrs. Fred Van Zuiden, formerly a resident of Sioux Center, and a daughter of Pete Muilenburg, died in Sioux City on January 5, 1931. Mrs. Van Zuiden was a daughter of one of Sioux County's earliest settlers. Her father-in-law Mr. Van Zuiden was the first storekeeper, postmaster, and school teacher in Sioux Center. The Van Zuiden family was the first to settle in Sioux Center, their residence was in the old town. Two of the oldest pioneer families of the town and county were united in marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Van Zuiden. The second generation is already passing---the frontier which their forefathers attacked is also a thing of the past. We, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are carrying a new and complex burden, but the will to carry it is our inheritance.

The Muilenburg family came originally from Pella in 1868 and settled in Orange City. Jake Muilenburg a resident of Sioux Center, came to Sioux County as a boy with his father, Hubert Muilenburg. He is one of the original pioneers and is a cousin to Mrs. Van Zuiden. We find it hard to think of the pioneers extinction, there is something strong and pure about them, even in memory.
