Hawarden Independent of July 10, 1952

Emil Koob, 38, Dies at Iowa U. Hospital Emil Koob, 38, who spent most of his life in Hawarden, died unexpectedly about 7 o'clock Wednesday morning in the University hospital at Iowa City. Mr. Koob was taken to Iowa City Tuesday in the Frazier ambulance.

His brother, Bernard Koob, accompanied him to the hospital. He had been ill for over two years and suffered from bronchiectasis. However, he worked through Monday, the day before he was taken to Iowa City. An autopsy was performed at Iowa City yesterday and when the Independent went to press no report had been received nor had funeral arrangements been made.

A son of Mrs. Susan Koob, he was born in Hawarden April 12, 1914, and received his education here. He was a graduate of the local high school and was valedictorian of his class. On November 4, 1940, he married Miss Rose Mary Slinger of Hawarden. After his marriage he went to Graettinger, Iowa, where for four years he and his wife operated their own variety store. Then he was called to the service but failed to pass the physical examination and thus was sent to Baraboo, Wis., for defense work and served in this capacity five months. He then returned to Hawarden and was named manager of the state liquor store. For 6 years he held this position, resigning just recently because of his health.

He was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary's church in Hawarden. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and due to the fact that he had been engaged in defense work during World War II and three of his brothers served, he was given an honorary membership in the Two Oakes Post of the American Legion

Susvivors are the widow; three children, Bobby, 10, Carol Jean, 8, and Colette, 5; his aged mother, Mrs. Susan Koob; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Ristow, and four brothers, John, Joe, Bernard and Bob, all of Hawarden.
