Lucia Ann Starkenburg, 52, died July 6, at her home in Boyden.

Funeral services were conducted at First Reformed Church in Boyden Wednesday, July 9, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Dan Hauge and the Rev. Matthew Draffen officiating. A service of prayer and praise took place at Tabernacle Baptist Church at George on Tuesday,July 8, at 7 p.m. Burial was at the Canistota Cemetery, Canistota, South Dakota.

Lucia was born August 22, 1944, at Ionia, Michigan, the daughter of William and Eunice Billie (Imus)Lyon. She lived her youth in East Jordan, Michigan, where she graduated from the East Jordan High School in 1962. She received her associate's degree at North Central College at Petoskey, Michigan.

She married Donald Tomkins on December 26, 1964, at Petoskey. Following their marriage they lived at Lombard, Illinois, prior to moving to Canistota, South Dakota, where he was a chiropractor. He died in January 1980.

Lucia married Leo Starkenburg on March 7, 1981, at Monroe, South Dakota. Their married lifetime was spent in the Boyden community. She worked at Village Northwest Unlimited at Sheldon prior to her association with the Sioux County Hospice at Sioux Center in 1987. She became one of the founders of the Wings of Hope Hospice in O"Brien County iin 1991, where she served as volunteer and bereavement coordinator.

Special interests of Lucia's included collecting and merchandising antiques along with collecting dolls and angels. She also enjoyed singing and music. Family was very important to Lucia and she cherished the times she could spend with her family and grandchildren.

She was an active participant of Tabernacle Baptist Church at George and with a women's Bible study for eight years.

Survivors include her husband Leo of Boyden; her children,Larry and Sandy Starkenburg of Hull, Julie and Rod Radcliffe of Dumont, Les and Carla Starkenburg of Boyden, Loren and Michele Starkenburg of Sioux City, Lisa and Hector Rivera of Chicago, Illinois, Lorelei and Bart Carey of St. Paul, Minnesota, Glenn and Stacie Tomkins of Madison, Wisconsin, and Trevor Tomkins of Hull; her mother of Cheyboygan, Michigan; three brothers, William P. Lyon of Alpena, Michigan, and Doug R. Lyon of Rockford, Michigan; one sisters, Linda Hyde of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; and 15 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and her husband Donald.
