Johanna Kool
Johanna Kool, 77, of Hawarden died Monday, August 27, following a brief hospital stay. Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, with the Rev. Orville Kool officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton.

Johanna Kool was born September 9, 1929, at Hawarden, the daughter of Andrew and Dreka (Vande Hoef) Kool. She was baptized at Christian Reformed Church. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1947 and began a teaching career that lasted almost 50 years. She received her master's degree from Wayne State College. She began teaching in rural Iowa schoolhouses, taught at Wayne State College and the University of Wisconsin. Other teaching positions from around the world including Alaska, Turkey, Ethiopia and Cuba, as well as travels to countries around the globe.

She enjoyed working in her garden during her retirement years and sharing the bounty of her exceptional skills with family and friends.

She is survived by her sister and her husband, Rena and Fred Holtrop of Ireton; a brother and his wife, Marvin and Patt Kool of Huron, South Dakota; a sister-inlaw, Helen Kool of Hawarden; and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Adrian Kool.
