Sioux County Capital, February 18, 1993

Dick Van Gelder, age 95, of Orange City, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1993 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Feb. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Ralph A. Pontier officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Dick was born May 17, 1897 in The Netherlands, the son of Reik & Marje (Bakker) Van Gelder. At the age of six years, he came to the United States. His family settled at Orange City where he lived most of his life.

On May 17, 1922, he married Nellie Kroeze at Orange City. She died Aug. 26, 1966 at Hull. On Nov. 21, 1967 he married Dora Kanis. She died Nov. 12, 1973 at Orange City.

Mr. Van Gelder was a cement mason, retiring in 1962. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.

Survivors include his two sons, Reynold and his wife Eleanor of Alton, and Gerben and his wife Jan of Orange City; three daughters: Etta and her husband Wally Zwagerman of Hospers; Elizabeth Brown of Orange City, and Ann and her husband Robert Vande Weerd of Rock Valley; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Marjorie and her husband John Swets; son-in-law Gene Brown; two brothers, William and John, and sister, Annie Andringa.
