Sioux County Capital, February 21, 1985

John Van Gelder, 91, of Orange City died Tuesday in the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday in the First Christian Reformed Church. Dr. Carl Zylstra will officiate. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under direction of the Van Gelder Funeral Home.

Mr. Van Gelder was born Oct. 29, 1893 in The Netherlands. He came to the United States in 1902. He married Anna DeVries, Feb. 22, 1917 in Ireton. They farmed at Ireton until 1930 when they moved to rural Orange City. They moved into Orange City in 1956 and retired in 1959. She died Dec. 12, 1973.

Mr. Van Gelder was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Men's Society and the Men's Psalm Singers. He served on the Ireton Christian School Board.

Survivors include five daughters: Mrs. Marion (Jennie) Schalekamp; Mrs. John B. (Margaret) Reinders; Mrs. Jo Hofland, and Miss Agnes, all of Orange City, and Mrs. Marvin (Mary Ann) Vlieger of Chandler, Minn; four sons, Randall and Gerrit J., both of Orange City; George of Colton, CA. and Kenneth of Ireton; one brother, Dick R., of Orange City; 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna; a son, Charles; two sisters and one brother.
