Hawarden Independent, February 24, 1938
Monroe, S.D. - Monday: John A. Van Gelder, a former well known farmer of Eagle and Washington townships, passed away at his home at Monroe, S.D., at 7 o'clock Monday morning after an illness which extended over a long period of years. He was between 45 and 50 years of age. While a resident of this community he operated the farm now owned and occupied by H. F. Witt in Washington township and also the farm known as the A. E. Brunsting place in Eagle township. He left here with his family about ten years ago, locating on a farm near Monroe, S.D. After two or three years he was obliged to give up farming owing to ill health and has since made his home in the town of Monroe where he has been an invalid for about seven years. He is survived by his wife and seven children.
Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the home and at 1:30 in the Holland Reformed church in Monroe. Interment was made at that place.
