Dorothy Marie Vande Weerd, 70, of rural Alton died Friday, January 12, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Services were Tuesday, January 16, at 1:30 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Hospers with the Rev. Brian Janssen officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery near Hospers.

Mrs. Vande Weerd was born July 20, 1930 in rural Boyden, the daughter of Arie & Jennie (Kooiker) Van Der Weide. She was raised in rural Boyden and graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1947. She married Harold Vande Weerd in rural Boyden on January 17, 1951. They made their home on a farm between Hospers and Alton, where their son John now farms. In addition to farming, the couple, with their son David, owned and operated Vande Weerd Trucking. She was a homemaker and remained active in the family business until her death.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where in earlier years she and her husband belonged to the Couples Club. Her family has always been a very important part of her life. She especially enjoyed going to their summer home at Round Lake, Minnesota, cooking and going shopping with her daughters.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, John and Darla Vande Weerd and David and Crystal Vande Weerd, all of Hospers; three daughters, Shirleen Post of Rock Valley, Arlyce and her husband Dave Kroese of Nevada and Kathy Jo and her husband Tom Ennema of Hospers; six grandsons; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and four brothers and four sisters, Willie Vander Weide of Bellflower, CA; Clara Scholten of Sioux Center; Arthur "Bud" Van Der Weide of Wayland, MI; Geneva "Toots" Wichers of Sioux Center; LaVonne Van Middendorp of Everson, WA; Audrey Pluim of Tulare, CA; Norman Van Der Weide of Grand Rapids, MI; and Dennis Van Der Weide of Boyden.

She was preceded in death by a son Harvey Glen.
