Born: February 10, 1893 rural Alton, Iowa
Died: March 1, 1984, St. Petersburg, Florida

Ralph Van Zyl, age 91, of Port Charlotte, Fla, formerly of Alton, passed away Thursday, March 1 at the Beverly Manor Convalescent Home in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Mr. Van Zyl was born February 10, 1893, on a farm near Alton, the son of Roelof Van Zyl and (Annie Van Boven) Van Zyl.

In 1917 he graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City. He then served in the United States Army during World War I.

On November 16, 1922, he married Anne M. Bonnecroy at Orange City. They made their home in Alton.

From 1922-1958 Mr. Van Zyl was employed by Farmers Mutual Co-operative Association of Alton, serving as manager the last 26 years.

On July 12, 1962, Mrs. Van Zyl passed away.

In October of 1962, Mr. Van Zyle moved to Port Charlotte. He later married Josephine M. Will.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Charlotte and the American Legion Post 110.

He was a former member of Alton City Council and served as mayor of Alton for two years. He was also a former member of Alton Board of Education, serving as chairman of the board for five years.

Survivors include his wife.

Private interment was at Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton, under the direction of Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.
