Francis "Fat" Konz, 79, of Alton, IA passed away Friday, May 14, 2004 at the Orange City Hospital in Orange City, IA. Francis was born November 21, 1924 at rural Alton, IA the son of John P. and Theresa (Mousel) Konz.

Francis died after a courageous battle with cancer. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education in the rural school system and St. Mary's Academy in Alton. He was then a farm laborer in the Alton Area. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters from October 24, 1944 until his discharge June 3,1946 aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CV14). He then returned to Alton to farm with his father. On Aug. 4, 1953 he married Agnes Pottebaum at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. They made their home on the family farm near Alton where they farmed with his father for 3 years, then took over the farm for themselves. They retired on the farm in 2000 and moved into Alton in 2001.

Funeral Service was 10:30A.M. Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. John Vakulskas and Msgr. Nicholas Ruba and Msgr. Kenneth Seifried. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Alton. Graveside military services were conducted by Floyd Post 200 American Legion. Fisch Funeral Home at Remsen handled arrangements.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Agnes of Alton; four sons and their wives, Kenny and Patty, Mike and Rhonda, Dale and Joleen, Brian and Sheri all of Alton; four daughters and their husbands, Kay and Denny Koob of Granville, IA, Ann and Bill Brungardt, Janet and Tim Zinnel all of Fort Dodge, IA, Can and Matt Lawler of Sioux City, IA; 23 grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; two brothers, Ronald and Peter and his wife Delores all of Alton; two sisters and their husbands, Margaret and Wally Lehnertz of Redmond, OR, Viola and Ray Krier of Remsen, IA; one sister-in-law, Bernice Konz of Rock Valley, IA.

Francis was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Rosary Society, Floyd Post 200 American Legion all of Alton, Knights of Columbus and Sportsmen Club both of Remsen. He enjoyed fishing and hunting but most of all his family and grandchildren.

Casket Bearers were Josh Brungardt, Justin and Matt Konz, Aaron, Jamie and Rob Koob. Francis was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Rachel Lawler; four brothers, Melvin and Ferdinand both in infancy, Robert, Cletus and his wife Mary; one sister, Leola and her husband Omar Ricke. Visitation was after 2:00 P.M. on Monday. There was a rosary at 3:00 P.M. by St. Mary's Rosary Society, a vigil prayer service at 7:30 P.M. and a rosary at 8:00 P.M by the Knights of Columbus all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.
