Greta Kooi, 96, of Sioux Center, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility. Funeral service was held July 5, at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church of rural Sioux Center with the Rev. Stephen Rhoda officiating. Interment followed in Lebanon Cemetery of rural Sioux Center. Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux. Center was in charge of arrangements.

Margaretha Johanna Willemina (Vos) Kooi was born on Sept. 28, 1907 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands the daughter of Leendert and Alida (Van Verseveld) Vos. Greta was raised in Rotterdam until the age of 12 when she immigrated to the United States, where the family settled in northwest Iowa. On Feb. 12,1930, she married George Remko Kooi in Hawarden. The couple farmed and raised their family just west of Lebanon, Iowa. In 1966, after retiring, they moved to their home in Sioux Center. They both became residents of the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility in October of 1996. Mr. Kooi died on Nov. 22,1999.

For many years Greta had been an active member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church and later Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. She participated in many church groups and functions. Greta was a member of Garfield Township Ladies Group and the senior citizens group from New Homestead.

Survivors include her six children: Grada Van Ballegooyen of Hawarden, Lane Kooi of Orange City, George R. Kooi of Sioux Falls, Alida Scholten of Maurice, Margene Fluit of Larchwood, Linda Altena of Sioux Center; 31 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren.
