John Synhorst, veteran Orange City merchant, died very suddenly Friday, June 18, at 1:30p.m. at his home following a heart attack. He had been in ill health for some time but had made his customary trip down town and to the barber shop in the morning so his sudden death came as a shock to the community.
He had attained the age of 77 years and 10 months. He was born at Pella in 1860. He came with his parents to Sioux County when 18 years of age and assisted his father who was a butcher. In 1882 he was married to Miss Esther Mak of Orange City. Shortly after that he opened up a meat market which he operated until about 12 years ago when he was forced to retire because of ill health.
He is survived by his widow and five children, Cathryn, Mrs. L.D. Van Pelt, Glendale, California, Miss Jennie at home, Sheriff Hugo Synhorst, Frank Synhorst of Wasta, South Dakota, and Magdaline, Mrs. G. J. Rieder, of Brooklyn, New York. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. J. C. Jongewaard of Hurley, South Dakota, 8 grand children and one great grand child. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon a 1 o'clock at the home and 1:30 at the American Reformed Church with the Rev. Mr. L. Nattress officiating. Interment was made in the local cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Synhorst of Wasta South Dakota and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Jongewaard and Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Jongewaard of Hurley, South Dakota.
