Died: 1941James Walpole, 81, died suddenly Saturday morning at about 11 o’clock of a heart attack at his home in Rock Valley. While working in his garden he became ill so went to the home of his daughter. The doctor was called but was unable to save him and he passed away. He had not been well for the past few months.
James Walpole was born on February 17, 1860 on a farm in Delaware county. He moved with his family onto a farm in Buchanan county, and later to Buena Vista county where they farmed near Storm Lake. Mr. Walpole came to Sioux county as a young man and farmed southwest of Rock Valley.
On February 17, 1886 he was united in marriage with Emma Scott at Alta, Iowa and to this union five children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Walpole lived on different farms in the Rock Valley vicinity and in 1896 they moved to Rock Valley. He was interested in breeding cattle and joined his brother in breeding shorthorn cattle which he exhibited at fairs and stock shows. Mr. Walpole was a member of the State Fair Board and of the Rock Valley District Fair Association. He is a past member of the Odd Fellows lodge. During his years in Rock Valley Mr. Walpole has served two terms as mayor, not consecutive, as councilman an as a member of the school board.
Mr. Walpole is survived by his children, Gladys, Mrs. Wayne Thayer of Los Angles, California Lois, Mrs. Henry De Sair of Van Nuys, California, Leslie Walpole of Correctionville, Helen, Mrs. Dale Farren of Rowan, Iowa, and Irma, Mrs. Henry Ver Meulen of Rock Valley. Three grandchildren, Helen Jean and Robert Walpole and Jack Ver Meulen. One brother Emmett Walpole of Hancock; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Howell of Rock Valley; Julia, Mrs. W.H. Irving and Ellen, Mrs. Carl Relyea of Atlantic, Iowa. Mrs. Walpole passed away on May 5, 1941. Three members of the family have died recently; Thomas in Oregon in June 1940, Matthew of Rock Valley in December 1940, Miss Elizabeth Walpole of Storm Lake on May 24, 1941. Another brother John preceded him in death several years ago.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 o’clock at the Methodist Church.
