Hawarden Independent July 31, 1941

Gerrit Vander Schoor, 59, a resident of Hawarden for 21 years, passed away suddenly at his home at 11:45 Saturday morning from coronary thrombosis. Mr. Vander Schoor was down town when stricken and was picked up at the Fairmont Ice Cream store by
Adolph Berg, who took him to a physician, after which he was removed to his home. He lived about an hour and was able to converse with the members of his family.

Funeral services were held at the Associated church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. T. H. Harding in charge. Burial was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

Gerrit Vander Schoor was born at Orange City Sept. 19, 1881, and his entire life, with the exception of 10 years, was spent in Sioux county. His father died when he was but six months old and when 16 years of age he began clerking in a store in Orange City. He was united in marriage with Nellie Sorgdrager in Sioux City Nov. 29, 1906.

When he left Orange City he lived at Boyden and later at Rock Valley. Then for 10 years he operated a store at Archer. In 1920, he came to Hawarden. He was employed as a clerk in the B. J. Hyank store until the business was sold. For two years he was a clerk in the Henry Margolin mercantile store in this city.

He was the last member of a family of eight children. He is survived by his wife and five children; Mrs. Alfred Skogman of Chatsworth, Mrs. Charles Tomlinson of Sioux City, Wallace of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Raymond and Harold Vander Schoor at home.One son died at infancy.

Slayton, Minn, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Vander Schoor and Mr. and Mrs. H. Roozeman of Orange City, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Tomlinson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Skellingstad, and Mrs. Harry Freerks of Sioux City, Jason De Waay of Sheldon, Mrs. Henry Kleinheksal and Jake Koolbeck of Archer, Mr. and
Mrs. John De Zeeuw, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew De Zeeuw, Mrs. Henry Wandscheer and Anna De Zeeuw of Sioux
Center, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew De Graaf and Gerrit Vander Wilt of Alton, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoffs and
Mrs. John Fonkert of Newkirk, Mrs. John Hoffs of Hospers, and John Dykstra and daughter of Hull.
