Peter R. Wielenga, age 88, of Orange City passed away Tuesday, October 4 at the Orange City Municipal Nursing Home.

Peter was born Aug. 27, 1900 at Orange City, the son of Reinder Wielenga and Wilhelmina Cupido Wielenga.

On Dec. 19, 1923 he married Roelvina "Ruth" Cleveringa at Sioux Center. They farmed west of Orange City until 1929. From 1931-52 he was employed by the city of Orange City as police chief and street commissioner. From 1952-68 he served as street commissioner only. He was also baliff of the Sioux County Court House for 50 years, from 1935-85. Many people knew him as "Pete the Cop".

On July 4, 1980, Mrs. Wielenga passed away at Orange City. In August of 1987, Mr. Wielenga became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in March of this year he transferred to the nursing home.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he had served on the consistory as a deacon. He was also a member of the Iowa Police Chiefs Association and a former member of the board of directors of West Lawn Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter Arlene and her husband, Orville Oolman of Orange City; sons, Wilmar and his wife Beverly of Rock Rapids, and Peter Jr. and his wife Sylvia of Englewood, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Wielenga of Orange City; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son; Raymond; one great-grandson; a brother, Albert and sisters, Susan Wassenaar and Sarah.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 8, at the First Christian Reformed Church. The Rev. Ralph A. Pontier officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
