Roy Arthur Vander Stoep, 83, of Orange City died Friday, August 19, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley. Memorial services were Monday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City with the Revs. Donald De Glopper, Garret Docter and Willis Vander Kooi officiating. Burial prior to the service was at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Vander Stoep was born on July 24, 1911, in Hospers, the son of Andrew and Francine (Van Citters) Vander Stoep. He was raised in Orange City. He married Bertha H. Vellinga on February 15, 1937, in Middleburg. They lived in Orange City where he was a cement mason. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II, being stationed in New Guinea and receiving a Purple Heart. After the war, he was employed at a plumbing shop in Orange City. He later became a partner in that shop, Orange City Plumbing and Heating. In 1981, he joined the maintenance staff at Northwestern College in Orange City, retiring in 1991.

Vander Stoep was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory as a deacon. He was also a 25 year member of the Orange City Volunteer Fire Department, where he had served a term as chief, and he had been a member of Orange City's city council.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Francine and Marvin Muilenburg, and Diane and Tom Vander Broek, all of Orange City; six grandchildren, Matthew and Lacey Muilenburg, and Cora, Caleb, Renee and Mikael Vander Broek; two sisters, Pearl Smith of LaPuente, California, and Dorothy De Bey of Woodland Hills, California; two aunts, Alice Van Citters and Cora Ripmeester; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Charles, and a sister, Helen Spaan.
