Alton Democrat of Sep 2, 1905

A very sad accident happened Wednesday morning on the railroad crossing south of Chatsworth. The two children of George Putnam were trying to cross when the southbound passenger came along. The horse balked and the engine struck the buggy killing the son Elmer aged twelve and throwing the little girl aged fourteen into the pond of water about ten feet from the track.

The train crew picked up the little girl and took her to Sioux City and the doctors at the hospital found that she was badly bruised and had a serious wound over her right eye but reports are favorable for her recovery. A special train came back and took Mr. Putnam to Sioux City. The mother is prostrate with grief.

(In the 1900 census of Portland Tsp. Plymouth county George N. Putnam was born Apr 1868 Iowa and his wife Julia S. Was born 1867. They had four children Elmo A. (Elma?) age 9, Elmer W. age 7, Madlon D. age 3, and Doris E. age 10 mo.)
