Gerrit Zalme, 71, died Dec. 2 in a hospital at Spokane, Wash., following a lingering illness.
Services were Monday, Dec. 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City. Pastor Ray Tilstra officiated.
Gerrit was born Nov. 7, 1914, at Paterson, N.J., the son of William and Jennie (Broek) Zalme. He retired from the railroad five years ago and had been living in Spokane, Wash., for the last several years, where he spent time writing poetry. Some of his works have been published.
He attended the Reformed Church of Spokane, Wash.
Survivors include a brother, Charles of Wilmington, N.C. and sister, Mrs. Nick (Annie) Jilderda of Sheldon. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
