Obituary of Kathryn B. Mortenson (Source after July 14, 2000)

Died June 12, 2000

Kathryn Bell Mortenson passed away June 12, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Ia, reaching the age of 89 years, 8 months and 12 days. Innichment took place at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, AZ. Memorial gifts will be directed to The King's Engineering Fellowship of Orange City.

In addition to her parents, she was prededed in death by her husband, Bertil Carl Mortenson, who passed away in May of 1975 in Sun City, AZ. They were married Oct. 14, 1933. Her only brother, Edward S. Ganntt, died in June of 1990. During her nearly 90 years, Kathryn spent 47 years in IL. (Morgan Park, Beverly Hills, Yorkville on a farm, Wheaton, Aurora), 35 years in AZ, 2 years in NJ. and nearly 6 years living with her son and his wife in Orange City, IA.

She was born to Thomas Albert and Fannie May (Bell) Gantt Sept. 30, 1910, in Chicago, IL, and was graduated from Northwestern University with a music major. Before her children started college, she became a certified teacher and several years later earned her Masters Degree in Education at the University of Northern Ilinois. From 1952 to 1972, she taught junior high or high school English and literature four years in Aurora, IL, one year in Mesa, AZ. and fourteen years in Glendale, AZ.

Mrs. Mortenson was a member of the Dover Ave. Alliance Church in Orange City. In earlier years she was active in other churches where she lived. Daughter-in-law, Alice, remembers her as her best high school Sunday School teacher.

Her conversion to Christ took place shortly before her twins were born. She faithfully instructed her three children in the way of the Lord and conducted classes (under the auspices of Child Evangelism Fellowship) in her home during their grade school years.

Kathryn took great delight in reading. During her Orange City years she befriended several international students, also giving guidance and English assistance.
Survivors include one son, two daughters and their spouses;
Carl and Alice Mortenson of Orange City IA.
Cecelia and John Martin of Columbia , MD.
Faith and Clifford Saunders of Irvin, CA.

She had ten grandchildren, and twenty two great-granchildren.
