Elizabeth (Bessie) Zoeteman passed away at the Extendicare in Fort Macleod on Monday, December 2, 2002 at the age of 97 years.

Bessie was born in Hull, Iowa, on March 30, 1905, to Jacob and Leentje Leeuwrick and at the age of four years she moved with her family to the Pearce district. She was raised and attended school at Pearce and later married Isaac Zoeteman on December 21, 1926. They made their home on the farm at Pearce where they farmed and raised registered Hereford cattle. Bessie loved gardening and looking after her flowers in the summer. She was a faithful member of the Red Cross for many years and spent many hours sewing, knitting, and crocheting quilts and afghans. She enjoyed music and playing cards and even at 95 years of age was a very good cribbage player. Bessie remained on the farm until August 1996. She moved to the Macleod Pioneer Lodge in Fort Macleod where she made many new friends. She was then transferred to the Extendicare on March 1, 2001, where she lived until her passing. She was the longest living resident of Pearce, having lived there 87 years.

Bessie is survived by her daughter, Lena Laidlaw, two sons, Sam and Robert (Fern), daughter-in-law Kit, as well as ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren
Bessie was predeceased by her husband Isaac in 1984, son Larry in 2000, son-in-law Donald Laidlaw in 1987, two grandsons Trenton in 1975, and Andy in 1997, two sisters Janet in 1913 and Nellie in 1996, and one brother Johnny in 1918.

The family wish to thank the personnel of the Macleod Pioneer Lodge and the Extendicare and the medical staff for their kindness and care they have given to Bessie over the past six years.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 6, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at Trinity United Church, Fort Macleod, with Reverend Aldeen McKay officiating. Interent in the Union Cemetery, Fort Macleod.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of one’s choice.
