Henry Zomermaand, 88, of Sioux Center died Friday, December 27, 2002, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, December 31 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Stephen Rhode and Rev. Bob Zomermaand officiated. Burial was held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center prior to the memorial service. The Memorial Funeral Home, Sioux Center was in charge of arrangements.

Henry was born June 9, 1914, at Rock Valley, the son of Egbert and Peteronella (Van Voorst) Zomermaand. He was raised on the family farm near Rock Valley and attended country school through the sixth grade. At the age of 11, he began working as a hired hand for area farmers. Henry married Anna Statema on February 26, 1941. They farmed at rural Maurice. The couple settled in Sioux Center after retiring in 1976. They served the congregation of Bethel Christian Reformed Church as church janitors for many years. They also worked as janitors at the New Homestead.

Mr. Zomermaand was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He was an avid reader and during the summer months he especially enjoyed casting a line at many area lakes.

Survivors include four sons, Edwin and Arlys Zomermaand of Sioux Center, Peter and Laura Zomermaand of Orange City, Dennis and Elaine Zomermaand of Maurice, and Bob and Janine Zomermaand of Sheyboygan, Wisconsin; a daughter, Shirley and Terry de Boom of Worthington, Minnesota, 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gerrit and Johanna Zomermaand of Struble, and John and Gert Zomermaand of Holland, Missouri; seven sisters, Henrietta and Oepke Niemeyer of Inwood, Ann Vande Wege of Holland, Missouri, Nellie Mesman of Ripon, California, Alice and Gerrit Topp of Artesia, California, Rolena and William Wissink of Ankeny, Albertha and Case Van Hofwegen of Hanford, California, and Hattie and John Boeve of Visalia, California; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Zomermaand of Rock Valley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Zomermaand; two brothers, Bert Zomermaand and Richard Zomermaand; and three sisters, Minnie Van Beek, Lucy Vande Wege and Jennie Droog.

Memorials may be directed to the Bethel Christian Reformed Church Memorial Fund.
