Mr. James Woudstra, 82, of Orange City passed away Friday, April 1, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital after a brief illness.

James was born August 15, 1900, in Wolvega, the Netherlands, the son of Lolke Woudstra and Renske Bouma Woudstra. His father died when he was 16 years old, and in 1920 Jim came to the United States with his mother and two brothers. They settled at Hospers.

On February 21, 1924, he married Hattie Kreykes near Hospers. They made their home in Orange City where, in 1926, Mr. Woudstra became a partner in the Bouma-Woudstra Meat Market. A few years later it became the Woudstra Meat Market, where his sons later joined him in business. On February 1, 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Woudstra became residents of the pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder on the church consistory. He was a former member of the boards of directors of the Orange City Christian school and Pine Rest Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mr. Woudstra also served as councilman on the Orange City Council.

Survivors include his wife; six children: Mrs. John L. (Salley) DeGroot of Greenville, South Caroline; Alfred, Mrs. Gary (Marilyn) Kroeze and Leroy, all of Orange City; Mrs. Dick (Sylvia) Veltkamp of Rock Valley and Mrs. Bernard (Joyce) Vande Griend of Doon; 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Ike and Ted, both of Hospers.

Mr. Woudstra was preceded in death by one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 5, at the First Christian Reformed Church, with the Rev. Thomas C. Vanden Heuvel officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.
