Charles Dawson, long time and highly respected resident of this city and community passed away at the Hawarden hospital at 9:15 Monday evening, April 11, 1938 following a brief illness from pneumonia. Mr. Dawson was taken ill Sunday and his condition quickly became critical and he was removed from his home to the hospital only Monday morning.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock and at the Methodist church at 2:30 this afternoon with Rev. Robert F. Chapler, the pastor, in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery.

Charles Dawson was one of a family of eight children born to John and Ann Robson Dawson. He was born at New Diggings, Lafayette county, Wisconsin, May 26, 1858, so lacked but little more than a month of being 80 years of age. He grew to young manhood in Wisconsin but in 1879 at the age of 20 years became interested in the gold rush to the Black Hills and journeyed to that locality where he spent two or three years. He came to Sioux county with his brother, James Dawson, in 1882 and for a time operated a grain elevator for Close Bros., widely known farm operators of that period in Plymouth and Sioux counties. In 1883 he moved onto a farm near Ireton which he continued to operate for a period of five years, and then in 1888 he moved to a farm in Union county, S.D., northwest of Hawarden, where he made his home for many years. He was a highly successful farm operator and acquired extensive land holdings in Union and Lincoln counties. In 1889 he was united in marriage with Ellenor Caton of Lafayette county, Wis., and she has been his constant companion and helpmate during the 49 years which have intervened. They retired from active work on the farm in 1919 when they built a fine home in Hawarden and have since continued to reside in this city.

Besides his wife, Mr. Dawson is survived by three sons and three daughters, John C. Dawson of Hawarden; Miss Ann Dawson of New York City; Mrs. Fred Marshall of Leetonia, Ohio; Miss Laura Dawson of Winnetka, Ill.; Thomas G. Dawson of Hudson and Charles Jr. of Hawarden. There are four grandchildren, Misses Patty and Betty Dawson and Mildred and Dayton Marshall. He also leaves four brothers, James Dawson of Hawarden, and John, Dave and Joe Dawson of Benton, Wis., and one sister, Mrs. S.T. Hind of Washington D.C.

Two brothers Thomas and William preceded him in death.

Mr. Dawson was a man of splendid character and strictest integrity. Mild mannered, gracious, sincere in his friendships, he enjoyed the esteem of all who came to know him and he exemplified a fine type of citizenship in his daily life during his long residence in this community. Many outside the family circle will mourn his passing.
