Raymond W. Wierda, 72, of Alton died Sunday morning, April 7, at his home.

A committal service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Hospers Cemetery, under the direction of the Van Gelder Funeral Home, Orange City. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. at the First Reformed Church, Alton. Pastor Ray Tilstra officiated.

Mr. Wierda was born Oct. 10, 1912 at Hospers, the son of Jacob and Winnie (Vander Kamp) Wierda. He married Harriet Van't Hof on June 14, 1934 at Hospers.

He spent most of his married life at Alton where he owned Wierda Appliance. He was a member of the First Reformed Church of Alton, where he served as deacon, he was a World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was a former member of the Alton Public School Board and the Sioux County Park Board.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet; a daughter, Dr. and Mrs. Frederick (Charlotte) Leaske of Holland, Mich.; a son, Daryl Wierda, M.D. of Sioux Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren and a brother, James of Webster City.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

A Memorial has been established with Words of Hope.
