Ufken, William 1862-1932

Hawarden Independent February 2, 1932

William Ufken of LeMars, a former resident of this vicinity, passed away at his home in that city last Friday night following a lingering illness from pernicious anemia. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran Church in LeMars with Rev. J.J. Vollmar and Rev. Theo Meyer officiating. The remains were shipped to Delavan, Ill, for interment.

Ufke William Ufken was born in Ost Friesland, Germany, Feb. 12, 1862, and so he had attained the age of 70 years, 5 months and 10 days. He grew to young manhood and received his education in his native land, coming to America in 1885. He came to Plymouth county where he was employed on farms and at other occupations. He was united in Marriage with Lona Johanna Wubbenga in 1884 and following their marriage they came to Sioux county where they resided until 1918 when they moved to LeMars. Mr. Ufken owned the farm which is now owned by Henry Keehn, south of Hawarden, which he sold before moving to LeMars. He is survived by his wife and one son, John Ufken, and two sisters who live in Germany.

William Ufken was a hard working man who came to this country in the early years and helped develop this community. He was a loyal friend and many in this vicinity will learn of his passing with regret.

Those from here who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Lage and daughters, Mrs. William Jurgensen and Miss Ella Lage, Mr. and Mrs. Jas Hass, Harold Hass, Mr. and Mrs. George Bultman Sr., Carl Klumb, Mrs. Carl Johnson and daughter Emma and Henry Keehn.
